The United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley is hosting the second annual Live United Youth Camp for fourteen area 7th grade students, one from each of the twelve Muscogee County School District middle schools, Faith Middle School at Fort Benning and St. Anne Pacelli School.
Nate Klein, Volunteer Chair for the event stated, “We are excited to be able to do this event again this year.” Klein explained, “It’s a great way for these kids to learn about the value of volunteerism. Several of the participants from the first year’s Live United Youth Camp continued volunteering through the Volunteer Center at United Way after the camp.”
The three day event, that begins today and concludes on Sunday, is focused on helping youth grow as leaders and connecting them to the community, as well as, building lasting relationships with the United Way. The camp is focused on teaching students about income and basic needs, two of United Way’s priority areas. Youth will learn about homelessness and poverty, and the agencies that are working to combat these issues in our area. They will also have a chance to get connected with opportunities to give back to the community.
Participants will have the opportunity to tour local United Way partner agencies, Open Door Community House, Homeless Resource Network, Stewart Community Home and Goodwill Industries. At Open Door Community House the participants will go through an exercise that illustrates what it is like to be homeless, assist with the showering program and hear from clients who are homeless. Participants will learn more about homelessness and those that are affected by it at the Homeless Resource Network. On Sunday, the last day of the camp, participants will have the opportunity to buy items on a budget for the agencies that they have visited. They will present their items to the agencies on Sunday evening at the Youth Camp Graduation Ceremony. Students will also keep journals of their experiences, hear from a CSU Servant Leadership member and just have some fun.
Scott Ferguson, President and CEO of the United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley, stated, “The Live United Youth Camp is such an asset to our community. Working through our Volunteer Center and with the sponsorship of Aflac, we are able to begin to connect with the next generation and help them to understand the importance of giving back to their community by volunteering.” Ferguson concluded, “These young people will learn valuable lessons through this program that will enable them to make a positive impact on our community.”
